New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.Lao Tzu
After 15 years of working in therapeutic programs, Karyn is excited to be helping families support their loved ones with therapeutic placement. Karyn’s passion is helping adolescents and young adults explore their identity, learn coping skills for depression, anxiety, grief and trauma, move into appropriate phase of life tasks, and understand and manage complicated mental health and substance abuse challenges. She strongly believes in Family Systems Theory, and that healing is dependent on the whole system receiving support.
Karyn completed her Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University and a Master of Social Work with a Certificate in Marriage and Family Counseling from The University of Georgia. She has followed a variety of career interests and worked as a journalist, project manager, website developer, backpacking guide, ski host, wilderness field guide, therapeutic mentor, wilderness therapist and residential therapist.
Karyn is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist. She uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing as her primary modalities, and is also trained in DBT, CBT and EMDR. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
In her spare time Karyn and her husband Darren love to travel and find adventure. They met guiding backpacking and teaching cold weather camping to young people and connected through their mutual love of travel and outdoor activities. After growing up in Ohio, her spirit of adventure led her to live in several places – Chicago, New Mexico, Park City UT, and Northeast Georgia before settling in Asheville. Karyn relaxes by hiking, skiing, gardening, reading and enjoying the live music, theater and culture that Asheville offers.
